Today I published the first episode of the Garage Journals, something that, at least for the moment, I intend to be a series about plans and ideas, and whatever else I've been up to in my garage. We'll see if it takes.
I really enjoyed recording this video. It was nice to just chat on car stuff and things I find interesting without worrying too much about structure. I've learned a few things as well, doing this experiment. No. 1: Sound is hard. If I'm making more of these I'll definitely need to get myself better sound management. There was a ridiculous amount of noise in the recording at first, which had to removed by software. No. 2: Lighting, also hard. I made no attempts here other than natural light, and you can tell. No. 3: Video editing. OK, I guess everything about producing video content that doesn't look like complete crap is hard, period. Editing video in particular never feels straight forward to me. I'm using Final Cut to do these, and my expectations of how its user interface works seem to be wrong more often than they are right, which slows everything down.
But enough excuses. Here's episode 1. In this first episode I talk mostly about alignment specs and handling expectations resulting from it (the proof of that pudding will be next weekend, at the BMC Autocross III event). I hope you enjoy it!
